Dermatologist-Approved Spring Skincare Reminders
As we start exercising outdoors again, dining al fresco (without a coat) and spending weekends on the sidelines at our kids’ sporting events, it’s important to keep your skin’s health at top of mind—and be prepared for bug bites, sweat-induced body acne and more. Here are a few of Dr. Boakye’s top spring skincare tips to keep in mind…
Wear your sunscreen daily: This rule applies no matter what’s on the day’s agenda, as the skin is exposed to UV rays (and blue light) both indoors and out. When spending extended periods of time in the sun, don’t forget to reapply every two hours!
Protect your “skinvestment” with a wide-brimmed hat: The easiest way to maintain and optimize the skin improvement achieved with at-home products and office-based treatments is to steer clear of the sun. In addition to daily sunscreen use (and reapplying), keep a wide-brimmed hat in the car so you always have extra protection within reach.
Don’t forget your eyes: Your eyes need a yearly check-up just like your skin! Be sure to see an ophthalmologist to assess your eye health annually, and make sure your sunglasses are providing sufficient protection against damaging UV rays.
Treat bug bites ASAP: The sooner you soothe itchy skin, the less likely you are to scratch and injure your skin. Reduce inflammation with ice or an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream.
Don’t sit around in sweaty clothes: Although a shower is ideal, at the very least change your clothes after a jog or workout since sweat, oil and tight-fitting activewear create the ideal recipe for body acne.
If you need a refresher (or crash-course) for warm-weather skin safety, schedule a brief in-person or virtual* appointment so we can review the basics and make sure you’re stocked up on the skincare products you and the entire family need to safely enjoy the great outdoors again.
