Sun protection has gone way beyond “don’t forget the sunscreen.” A new wave of wearables can tell you, in real time, exactly how much UV your skin is soaking up, and today’s sun-protective clothing, hats, and sunscreens have real science behind them too. But not everything on your feed deserves a spot in your beach bag. Here’s the Bergen Dermatology team’s honest breakdown of what’s actually worth your money and what’s just a sunburn waiting to happen!

The Picks: Gear Worth Trying

1. L’Oréal My Skin Track UV

The Icks: 5 Red Flags to Avoid

1. Anything that helps you “optimize” your tan

A growing trend has people checking the UV index specifically to time peak sun exposure for a deeper tan. Any gadget or app marketed this way is working against your skin, not for it. A tan is visible proof of DNA damage, not protection.

2. “Natural” sunscreen alternatives pushed by influencers

Coconut oil, beef tallow, and similar viral swaps offer little to no real UV protection and shouldn’t replace an FDA-approved, broad-spectrum sunscreen.

3. Devices or content claiming sunscreen is dangerous

There’s no credible evidence that sunscreen causes cancer. UV radiation, on the other hand, is a well-established cause of skin cancer; don’t let a scary headline talk you out of SPF.

4. UV “sensors” that actually just measure visible light

Some cheaper wearables estimate UV by reading ambient brightness instead of true UV wavelengths. This approach falls apart in real-world conditions; for example, sunlight through a car window can look just as bright as direct sun but carries none of the UVB. If a device doesn’t specify a dedicated UV sensor, be skeptical of its readings.

5. No lab validation, no dermatologist input, no certification

Look for products that reference recognized standards (like ISO 17166 for UV Index measurement) or dermatologist collaboration. If a company can’t point to any testing or clinical backing, treat its claims and its data with caution. And remember: even the best wearable is a helper, not a substitute for sunscreen, shade, and UPF clothing.

6. Skipping sun protection during gel manicures

This one’s nuanced, so we’ll say it carefully: UV/LED nail lamps emit UVA, and lab studies have shown they can cause DNA damage and mutation patterns in skin cells, but the doses used in those lab studies are roughly 20–30x higher than what your hands actually get during a real manicure. Put in context, one modeling study found it would take about 250 years of weekly manicures to equal the UV dose of a single course of phototherapy, and a large population-based study found no measurable rise in melanoma linked to nail lamp use. So current evidence points to a real but very low risk, not an established cause of skin cancer. Still, since UV damage is cumulative, it’s an easy one to guard against. Apply sunscreen to your hands before your appointment, or wear dark, UV-blocking fingerless gloves during curing, especially if you’re on a photosensitizing medication or have a personal history of skin cancer.

The bottom line: wearable UV tech can be a genuinely helpful nudge to reapply sunscreen or head for shade, but it works best alongside the fundamentals, not instead of them. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+, shade during peak hours, and UPF clothing are still your skin’s best friends.
